The Union Ministry of Health and the Pharmacy Council of India have introduced the six-year Pharm D or Doctor of Pharmacy programme. This is to provide students intensive training in pharmacy practice and clinical pharmacy service. The first five years of the course are dedicated to academic sessions and the last year is dedicated to internship in a hospital.
In India, education in Pharmacy is available at different levels starting from Diploma to Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D levels. These courses lead to successful careers in the field of research and business. The Pharm D programme is designed with focus on the health care perspective of pharmacy. The course has patient care at its heart and provides extensive training in clinical pharmacy, pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical care. By the end of the course, students understand the responsibilities of a pharmacist in health care, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and therapeutic use of drugs.
